This spring, I had the immense honor of guiding a group of Springdale High School students through a powerful collaborative art project that has now become a temporary mural titled Grafting Springdale’s Past into the Future.
From our first class, I could tell that this would be more than just a painting on panels. It became a space where students could reflect, express, and weave their stories into something collective and lasting. Through weekly sessions, we explored themes of heritage, migration, growth, and unity, all through the metaphor of grafting, a technique used in apple farming that ties directly to Springdale’s agricultural history.
As we learned about how farmers graft branches to create stronger, more fruitful trees, we talked about how cultures, families, and communities come together in much the same way. These students brought personal imagery, cultural patterns, and symbols of hope and identity into the mural. Each panel tells a story: one of roots, one of transformation, and one of dreaming forward.
Despite delays, end of year tests, and tight timelines, the students showed up with dedication and heart. They made choices, took risks, worked collaboratively, and created something far bigger than themselves. And I couldn’t be prouder.
On May 14th, we celebrated the mural’s unveiling with a community gathering at the Shiloh Meeting Hall. Seeing some of the students stand in front of their work, beaming, proud, and maybe even a little surprised at what they accomplished, was a moment I won’t forget.
To everyone who helped make this possible: Mrs. Whitney Bell at Springdale High, the team at the Shiloh Museum, and especially the students, thank you for trusting me with this journey. Being chosen to lead this project has been a gift, and it reminded me of the power of young voices and shared stories.
